My journey so far at Tio Business School

From Philippines to the Netherlands

Moving abroad to study is not just an academic step, it is a personal journey of growth and self-discovery. Mikaella from the Philippines shares her experience at Tio Business School and how studying in Amsterdam has shaped both her learning and her perspective. Through honest reflections on culture, education, and everyday life, she offers a relatable glimpse into adapting to a new environment. Discover how this journey goes beyond a degree and becomes a meaningful transformation.

A classroom that encourages voice

Studying my MBA at Tio Business School in Amsterdam has changed the way I see learning and, slowly, the way I see myself. Coming from the Philippines, I was used to a fast academic rhythm. Deadlines came quickly, calendars were full, and large classrooms often made it easy to stay quiet in the background. At Tio, the pace feels different. There is more space to think, prepare, and understand. I learned that meaningful learning does not always come from speed, but from having enough time to reflect.

One of the biggest changes for me was the classroom environment. With smaller class sizes, lecturers know their students personally. Questions are welcomed, and opinions are encouraged. Coming from bigger classes, this gave me confidence to speak up and trust my own perspective.

Experiencing Dutch culture

Tio also introduced me to Dutch culture in simple and thoughtful ways, through language lessons, school activities, and everyday interaction. I never felt pressured to change who I was. Instead, I felt supported while learning something new.

A different rhythm of life

Amsterdam itself taught me a new rhythm. Biking instead of sitting in traffic. Moving through the city easily with trams and trains. Walking along canals. Enjoying quiet mornings. Seeing how life carries on, no matter the weather. Life feels slower but also more intentional.

The parts of home I miss

Of course, I miss home. I miss Filipino food, familiar flavours, and the natural warmth of Filipino conversations. I miss the liveliness that feels so natural in our culture. Here, life feels calmer and more reserved. Not better, not worse, just different. And in that difference, I am learning who I am becoming.

What I’ve learned

Finishing my first semester made me realize that this MBA journey is not only about a degree. It is about growth between two cultures, two versions of myself, and two ways of living. I am still learning. Still adjusting. Still dreaming. But I am grateful for the progress I’ve made, and for the journey still ahead.
