From Kerala to Amsterdam: What studying abroad taught me

Richu's journey to Amsterdam

Moving from Kerala, India to Amsterdam, the Netherlands has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. When I first decided to pursue my MBA in International Management at Tio Business School, I was excited about the opportunity to study abroad, experience a new culture, and build a future in Europe. However, I quickly realised that studying abroad is about much more than academics. It is a journey of personal growth, independence, and self-discovery.

Adapting to independence

Coming from Kerala, I was used to a culture where family plays a central role in daily life and decision-making. In India, it is common to have a strong support system around you, whether it is family, relatives, or friends. Arriving in Amsterdam meant stepping outside that comfort zone. Suddenly, I was responsible for managing every aspect of my life, from budgeting and grocery shopping to balancing studies and part-time work.

Developing through education

Studying at Tio Business School has also been an important part of my development. The MBA programme has exposed me to classmates from different countries, industries, and professional backgrounds. Working on projects with people from various cultures has taught me the importance of adaptability, teamwork, and intercultural communication. These are skills that are increasingly important in today's global business environment.

Embracing the cycling culture

One of the first things that stood out to me was the Dutch cycling culture. In Kerala, most people rely on motorbikes, cars, or public transport. In Amsterdam, the bicycle is not just a mode of transport; it is a way of life. At first, cycling everywhere felt exhausting and unfamiliar. Over time, however, it became one of my favourite parts of living in the Netherlands. Cycling gave me a sense of freedom and helped me explore the city from a different perspective.

Growing beyond my comfort zone

Perhaps the biggest lesson I have learned is that growth often happens outside of your comfort zone. Moving to another country can feel intimidating at times. There are moments of uncertainty, homesickness, and cultural adjustment. However, these experiences have helped me become more resilient, independent, and confident in my ability to adapt to new situations.

Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to study in the Netherlands and to be part of the Tio community. The experience has not only expanded my academic and professional knowledge but has also shaped me as a person. For anyone considering studying abroad, my advice is simple: embrace the challenges, stay curious, and be open to learning from every experience. The journey may not always be easy, but it can be one of the most rewarding decisions you will ever make.

Looking ahead

As I continue my studies and professional journey, I know that the lessons I have learned in Amsterdam will stay with me for years to come. From cycling through the city streets to collaborating with classmates from around the world, every experience has contributed to my growth and has made this chapter of my life truly unforgettable.
