"Studying at Tio is a great experience"

“I think my Tio experiences are really helpful for my future”, says exchange student from Malaysia Shuying Low. She’s studying Hotel and Event Management at Tio Utrecht for a semester. “The personal education at Tio suits me very well and at Tio I learned how to view things from a different perspective. I would definitely recommend it to other exchange students!”

From Taylor’s to Tio

Shuying Low was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. “Currently I’m pursuing a bachelor’s degree in International Hospitality Management at Taylor's University in Kuala Lumpur, one of the best private universities in Malaysia”, Shuying Low says. Four months ago she arrived in the Netherlands to study at Tio Utrecht for a semester.

Fun Hotel and Event Week

The Hotel and Event Management courses are great, definitely.” Shuying Low likes the courses at Tio a lot. “If I had to pick my favourite course, it would definitely be Hotel and Event Week. It was a chaotic yet fun week. Even though there were a lot of problems; when I looked back I realized that I learned a lot of things throughout this course.”

It suits me better

Studying at Tio is great, Shuying Low says. “I love studying at Tio, even though some of the subjects are hard. To be honest, I think the personal education at Tio suits me much better than the education system in Taylor’s University. Everything is different, from the size of a class to the teaching method of the lecturers, but I like it better. Overall, it is a great experience.”

Busses and bicycles

Studying abroad is a big and unforgettable experience. “I’m grateful that I chose the Netherlands for my student exchange programme”, Shuying Low says. “It will be an experience I will never forget, especially because this is my first time travelling to Europe. The things I like the most actually are the public transportation and of course the bicycles. It is really convenient and I will never be this satisfied with the public transportation in Malaysia.”

Living in Utrecht for four months now, Shuying Low likes it very much. “I like the serenity of Utrecht and it always calms me down. Utrecht is a cultural city, which is what I prefer. I do not like the hustle and bustle of a commercialized city like Amsterdam.”

Priceless experience

For Shuying Low it’s almost time to go home. “I think my Tio experiences are really helpful for my future because I learned how to view things from a different perspective and how not to limit myself to one view. At Taylor’s University I didn’t learn how to do this because a lot of the courses are really theoretical and everything must be done according to the books. I had a really great experience, so I would definitely recommend studying at Tio to other (exchange) students.”

We asked Shuying Low how she rates her university and programme:
  • How do you rate your programme? Excellent
  • How do you rate Tio? Excellent

"I will definitely give an excellent, not only for the quality of education provided, it's also for the helpful, friendly and enthusiastic staff that I met at Tio Utrecht. It's one-of-a-kind experience being around them as well."
