Choosing to study abroad is one of the biggest decisions a person can make. It means leaving behind family, friends, and everything familiar to pursue new opportunities in a different country. For me, moving from Sri Lanka to the Netherlands to study for a Master of Business Administration at Tio Business School has been a life-changing experience. It has challenged me academically, helped me grow personally, and opened my eyes to new cultures and ways of thinking.
Before arriving in the Netherlands, I had already completed my higher education and gained valuable work experience in Sri Lanka. One of the things I appreciate most about the Netherlands is its multicultural environment. People from many different countries live, study, and work here. As an international student, I have had the opportunity to meet classmates from diverse backgrounds, each bringing unique experiences and perspectives. These interactions have made classroom discussions more engaging and have helped me develop a more global mindset.
Studying MBA in Amsterdam
Studying at Tio Business School has been a rewarding experience. The classes are interactive, practical, and closely connected to real business situations. Rather than focusing only on theory, we analyse case studies, participate in discussions, and work on projects that prepare us for professional careers. The lecturers are knowledgeable, approachable, and always willing to support students when needed.
One of the most valuable aspects of my MBA programme has been learning to think critically and solve business problems from different perspectives. Part-time work
Like many international students, I also work part-time while studying. Balancing work and academic responsibilities is not always easy. There are busy weeks with assignments, presentations, and work commitments that require careful planning. However, this experience has taught me excellent time management and self-discipline. I have learned how to prioritise tasks, stay organised, and remain focused on my goals.
Longing for home yet embracing my new life
As an international student, there are moments when I miss my family and home in Sri Lanka. Modern technology makes it easier to stay connected through video calls, but living independently in another country teaches valuable life skills. It has made me more confident, adaptable, and resilient. Every challenge I have faced has helped me become stronger and more independent.
Looking back, choosing Tio Business School was one of the best decisions I have made. The education is practical, the learning environment is supportive, and the international atmosphere encourages both personal and professional growth. I have gained knowledge that extends beyond textbooks, including cultural awareness, leadership skills, and confidence in working with people from around the world.
