Studying at Tio promises to be a true experience. The information below will help you get started.
Visa information
Study progress
One of the criteria students must meet while holding a residence permit for study is sufficient study progress. Sufficient study progress means that you must obtain at least 50% of the required ECTS credits each academic year. As this is a strict annual requirement, Tio Business School will check your progress several times a year. Please note that in addition to reaching the minimum amount of credits, students are also required to be actively studying. This means that a student with a study permit must be following courses, attending lectures, and taking exams.
Financial proof
Each year you have to proof you have sufficient funds to study in the Netherlands. Please use this link for different methods to proof the sufficient funds.
Module exemptions
If you believe you are eligible for an exemption for one or more courses in the curriculum, you can request exemption(s) by sending an e-mail to examboard@tio.nl. You must submit any exemption request for an exam component and study unit to the exam committee within four weeks of the start of a semester, together with copies of relevant diplomas, study guides, certificates and lists of marks. The exam committee will reply to your exemption request(s) within ten working days.
Please note that any requests submitted after this deadline will not be processed, which means you will not receive an exemption. Exemptions can be awarded based on your previous education, for which the Dutch qualifications are leading.Even if you meet a course’s exemption requirements, you are still allowed to take the course in question if you wish. Should you also decide to take the course’s exam, your exemption will lapse and the result of your exam will count towards your grade. It is not possible to request an exemption if you have already taken a course’s exam. If you have purchased study materials for a course you later receive an exemption for, you will unfortunately not be eligible for a refund.
If you have any further questions about requesting exemptions, you can contact your (assistant) campus manager and/or request a meeting with your study coache.
Books
Mid August (when you enrol in September) or mid December (when you enrol in January) you will receive an email with instructions and information about how to order your textbooks. If you have any questions about the books or book lists, please send an e-mail to opleidingen@tio.nl.
Dress code
You can dress casually for your regular classes. During the Career Event and company visits off school grounds, the dress code is Tenue de Ville. This also applies to presentations and project week finals hosted at school.
Tenue de Ville
- For men, Tenue de Ville entails a suit and tie and dress shoes.
- For women, it means a suit (trousers or a skirt, blouse and jacket) and dress shoes )(heels are not required). When a skirt is worn, it should at least fall on the knee.
“Regular” pants/jeans and footwear like sneakers/Uggs are not allowed. Students who do not meet the dress code will not be admitted.
- For men, Tenue de Ville entails a suit and tie and dress shoes.
Tio App
Download the MyTio App for free and you will always have your grade information and current class and exam schedule at hand.
You can download the MyTio app via the App store or Google Play Store. Use the same login credentials as for your Tio email account to immediately access the latest news, your schedule, your digital student card and e.g. your campus’ direct telephone number. Throughout the academic year, you can also consult your marks and homework via the app.
Study facilities
Student card
All students of Tio have their personal Student ID card. This card entitles you to access the premises / building, use the student facilities, take part in the lessons and exams and to borrow equipment. You can enter the building during weekdays between 8.00 hrs and 18.00 hrs. In addition, along with your proof of identity, this student pass serves as your identification for taking exams.
As your access to the buildings, exams and benefits are determined by your Student ID card, take good care of it. In case you lose your ID card, make sure to report it directly to the Assistant Campus Manager in order to block the benefits of the card. You can request a new one via the Central Student Administration (csa@tio.nl). Replacement of a lost card costs €10.00.
Photocopying/printing
If you need to make more photocopies or prints, you can buy additional credit at the concierge desk. The photocopying machine can only be operated by using the photocopying/printing credit on your student pass.
Tio email address
You will have access to the Internet and get an e-mail account from Tio. All information provided by Tio will be only communicated through the Tio e-mail account (so not to any private Gmail, Hotmail or other mail accounts).
Student PC’s
Every Tio campus has free to use student PC’s in the lobby / canteen. At Tio Amsterdam you will also find student PC’s at the second floor. You can use these PC’s for quickly checking your email or news websites. All Tio campuses are equipped with a full range WI-FI network. Please request the login code on your arrival.
Study room
Need to study in total silence? Every Tio campus has its own library / study room. Just as in the other classrooms, no food or drinks are allowed here, with the exception of bottled water. In case you need a room to work on a practical assignment with a group of students, please consult the concierge for the availability of an empty classroom.
Lockers
All Tio campuses provide lockers to store books, bags or your personal belongings. You can register for a locker at the reception desk of the concierge. The lockers are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. You can register/book a locker at reception during the lunch break in the first week of classes.
Practical classrooms
Tio has some very special practical class rooms. Don’t be surprised if you all of a sudden end up in a hotel lobby, restaurant, airport check in desk, travel agency or board room. These class rooms are used for practical subjects such as aviation services, commercial skills and restaurant related professional skills.
Library membership
Tio gives all bachelor and exchange students a free annual membership of the Royal Library in The Hague or of a university library in your area.
Besides that, you can access the online database with articles about tourism, hospitality and business from EBSCO Publishing (ebscohost.com) via Blackboard. Tio’s own libraries are fairly small and consist of a small arrange of books. These books must remain in the library, which is why you can only consult them and not take them with you.
Student Society Cognatio and Nexus
Tio has its own enthusiastic and active student societies: Cognatio and Nexus. They organise many activities for its members, such as get-togethers for drinks or parties.
For parents
Tio informs the parent(s)/carer(s) about the attendance rate and study progress via the email address that was listed during the registration.
Your parents can also use the MyTio app to stay up to date on the latest Tio news, schedule information and your study results. They can download the MyTio app for free via the App store or Google Play Store. You can give your parents access via the “Monitoring” function in the “Settings” menu. When you enter your father and/or mother's name, you will receive an access code. Your parent(s) can then log into the MyTio app with your Tio email address and this code. View the instructional video on how to use the MyTio app here (in Dutch only).
