Checklist for first-year students

Have you signed up for a study course at Tio or are you planning to do so? Below, you will find a checklist that can help you with the application process. You will also find more information about financing your studies, living on your own and how to make the most of your time as a student.

Applying at Tio Business School

You can sign up for a Tio degree via tio.nl/en/registration.

Optional subjects and languages

  • In addition to Dutch and English, an additional language is mandatory in your first year. For each bachelor’s degree, the list of courses indicates which modern foreign languages you may choose from.
  • Tio has developed the course Introduction to finance and accounting for students whose prior education did not include Management and Organisation (M&O) or who scored a failing grade for this subject. In order to be admitted to the bacheor’s degrees, students are required to take this course at an additional cost. The course allows students who did not take the subject of M&O to enrol in a bachelor’s degree at Tio anyway.
  • Only applicable to the International Business Management bachelor’s degree:
Tio has developed the course Introduction to economics for students whose prior education did not include Economics or who scored a failing grade for this subject. In order to be admitted to the bacheor’s degrees, students are required to take this course at an additional cost. The course allows students who did not take the subject of Economics (or M&O) to enrol in a bachelor’s degree at Tio anyway.

Disabilities

If there are any factors that may affect your study results (e.g. disabilities such as dyslexia), you can report this on your application and during your intake interview. Together with you, the study coach will determine which special facilities Tio can offer you during your studies.

Submitting the application form

  • Have you completed all the steps of the application process? You will see a confirmation displayed on your screen and you will receive a confirmation of your application via email.
  • In order to complete your application, print out the confirmation, sign it and send it to Tio University of Applied Sciences. You can do so via regular mail (freepost 58761, 3508 WH Utrecht) or via email (submit a scan of the form to csa@tio.nl). Remember to include a copy of a valid ID (passport or ID card).
  • Tio requires a copy of your diploma and grades for the verification of your prior education. You can include these with your application or submit them to Tio after graduating.
  • After receiving your application, Tio will send you a written confirmation of your admission (provided that you meet the requirements regarding prior education). If your prior education does not tie in sufficiently with the bachelor’s degree you wish to enrol in, an interview and an assessment will be scheduled. The costs of the assessment are € 80. The results of the assessment and the interview are treated as alternative admission criteria by Tio. The admissions committee determines whether you will be accepted to Tio.

Study materials

  • You can order study books via the Tio student web. There are two order moments per academic year: in early July, you can order study materials for the first semester. In December, you can order study materials for the second semester. You will receive your login information for the student web before the start of the academic year.
  • You can purchase software with a special student discount via Surfspot. First, select Hogeschool Tio. Next, log in with your Tio login details and password.

Financing your studies

  • For Dutch and EU-students only: Apply for student finance via DUO. When taking a bachelor’s degree, you are entitled to student finance even before your 18th birthday.
  • For Dutch students only: In addition to getting student finance from the government, you can finance your studies at Tio via FiCon. This allows you to study at Tio without any starting capital.
  • For Dutch students only: If you are 18 or over, you must take out your own health insurance. Remember to apply for healthcare benefits. You are entitled to receive healthcare benefits if your annual income is lower than € 28,720.

Living on your own

Introduction

  • To give everyone a chance to meet each other before the start of the academic year, Tio and student society Cognatio host the introduction days in the Ardennes. These introduction days will take place from 21-29 August 2021. During your digital application, you can sign up for the introduction days under optional subjects. If you forgot, simply send an email to csa@tio.nl to sign up for the introduction days in August.
  • Prior to the academic year, the kick-off day and the welcome days will take place. Tio starts the academic year with an inspiring kick-off day that will be held on 17 December 2020 for students who start their studies in January and on 2 September 2021 for students who start in September. Students from all Tio campuses will attend guest lectures from leading industry figures. The welcome days are all about meeting your fellow students, getting to know the city and student society Cognatio, getting a look behind the scenes at businesses in the industry and, above all, having a good time. The welcome days are held on 30 and 31 August 2021.
