Tuition fees
The Master of Business Administration is a private master's degree from Tio University of Applied Sciences. Because of the private character and the exceptional education, the tuition fee is higher than that of government-funded education. With more budget, Tio can invest more into better lecturers, smaller classes, appealing projects and more lectures. The focus Tio puts on the quality of its education leads to satisfied students.
The overview below applies to Dutch students and students from the EU/EEA. For non-EU/EEA students, requiring a visa, Tio has put together a package fee. Detailed information on the package fee can be found below.
Annual fees for EU-students | Academic year 2023-2024 |

The options, and other matters such as electives, cancellation and price guarantees, are explained below.
Package fee for non-EU/EEA student (student needing a visa)
Tio welcomes students from all over the world. The information on this page is meant for students requiring a student visa to study in the Netherlands. Tio has put together package fees for students requiring a visa. The package fee has to be paid upfront so Tio can proceed with the visa application and housing arrangements.
In the table below you find the total costs for the first year at Tio and a summary of what is included in the package fee.Fees

Student finance via DUO
For Dutch students and students from the EU/EEA only
As a master student you may be eligible for Dutch student finance up to € 23,064 per year, provided you have not yet used all the assets of your student finance. If you have never used Dutch student finance for higher education, you are unfortunately not entitled to student finance for your MBA.
The student finance consists of a loan, tuition fee loan, student travel product and a supplementary grant (depending on parental income). The student finance is paid out in monthly terms and will be deposited into your account at the end of every month.
The amounts listed below are based on DUO data for the period from September to December 2023. No rights can be derived from this information.Supplementary grant
You are eligible to receive a supplementary grant if your parents have a lower than average joint annual income. The amount of the supplementary grant depends on the income of the parents and how many of their children are studying. The maximum amount of the supplementary grant is €430.27 per month. Calculate what the amount is in your situation via the calculation tool on duo.nl. After obtaining your bachelor’s degree (within ten years) the supplementary grant converts to a gift.
Study loan and tuition fee loan
Loan of € 11,494 per year
Students may € 527.60 per month. If you do not receive a supplementary grant or if your supplementary grant is lower than the maximum, you may borrow up to a maximum of € 957.87 per month.
Tuition fee loan € 11,570 per year
Students who are eligible for student finance may also apply for a tuition fee loan from DUO. The tuition fee loan for a bachelor or master programme at Tio amounts to €11,569.80 per year. It is paid out in twelve monthly terms of €964.15, at the same time as the rest of the student finance.
Conditions for a loan
The loan is taken out in the student’s name. This does not require any guarantee from a third party. The interest rate for 2023 is set at 0,46%. As soon as you receive the first payment of your loan, your loan will start to accrue interest that you must pay back later. The interest rate is subject to annual changes. After graduating the interest rate is frozen for five years at a time.
Borrowing with flexible repayment
Every year, you can borrow over €23,000 from DUO.
Loan and repayment via DUO
You start repaying your loan two years after graduating. Of course, you can start your repayments sooner if you wish. You can make use of a payment free period of up to five years, which you can rely on when you are going through an expensive time and need the money for other things (e.g. raising young children or buying a house). Having student debt will affect your ability to get a mortgage in the future. However, it will not prevent you from getting a mortgage.

After graduating the interest rate is frozen for five years at a time.
More time to repay
The repayment period is set at 35 years. If you earn less than the minimum wage, you do not have to repay your loan. Repayment of the interest-bearing loan starts ± 2 years after graduating and lasts for a maximum of 35 years. Additionally, the monthly amount you have to pay is never more than 4% of the income over the ability to pay exemption. If you have any leftover debt after 35 years, that sum is waived.
Example
The following fictional example1 shows how the monthly amount to be repaid is calculated. The ability to pay exemption2 for 2022 is € 22,760.35. You pay off 4% of the difference between your annual income and the ability to pay exemption: € 44,038 - € 22,760.35 = € 21,278 x 4% = € 851.11 / 12 months = € 70.93.

- This fictional example is intended to illustrate the repayment of student grant. The actual payments differ for each person and depend on several variable factors. No rights can therefore be derived from this example and the data used in it.
- Ability to pay exemption = annual minimum wage + holiday allowance.

- CPB, average gross income 2023.
- Any interest is added to this amount.
Student travel product
The student travel product is part of the student finance. There are two types of subscriptions: a week subscription and a weekend subscription. If you spend time abroad as part of your study programme, you are eligible to receive a monthly public transport compensation of €120.96 instead of the student travel product.
Am I eligible for student finance?
The student finance for the Master of Business Administration is part of the student finance for higher education. In higher education you can get a total of 7 years of student finance and 5 years for the student travel product. As long as you have not yet used your 7 years of student finance, you can apply for student finance for your MBA.
If you are currently receiving Dutch student finance, you can log in to DUO and see under 'My products' how many months of study you have used. The student finance for the MBA can only be granted if you meet the requirements mentioned above, plus you have a bachelor's degree and this is also registered with DUO.Student finance for students from the EU/EEA
Conditions for students from the EU/EEA
As an EU/EEA student, you are entitled to student finance and a student travel product:
- Provided that you work a minimum of 56 hours a month based on an official employment contract (the start date of your employment contract must be the 1st of the month) or if you have a monthly income of at least 50% of the social security norm. Your entitlement to student finance will continue for the duration of your contract. Do you work less than 56 hours per month, or is your monthly income less than 50% of the social security norm? Then DUO will assess your situation separately.
- You are also entitled to student finance if you have been living in the Netherlands for 5 consecutive years or more, or if your parent or partner works, or has worked, in the Netherlands for at least 56 hours per month. They must be citizens of an EEA country or Switzerland. You can also make use of the tuition fee loan on offer (annual amount of €11,045). If you work less than 56 hours a month, you can still apply for a tuition fee loan, but you are not entitled to student finance.
For more information visit DUO’s website.
Student grant via home government
You can apply for a student grant at your home government, even if you are doing your full time bachelor programme in the Netherlands. Please check if this also applies to your situation. Check the rules and conditions at the website of your home government.
Above mentioned information does not apply to Dutch students.
Health care benefit
(For Dutch students only)
If you are 18 years of age or older and your income is lower than €31,998 per year, you are entitled to a healthcare benefit. The healthcare benefit is maximised at €111 per month for incomes under €22,000. To be eligible for a healthcare benefit, it does not matter who pays for your health insurance. Your parents can pay the bills, as long as the insurance policy is in your name.More information
Performance-related grant
As a bachelor and master student, your student finance is a performance grant. It is a loan that must be paid back after you earn your degree. The student travel product and the supplementary grant may be turned into gifts, as long as you graduate within ten years of the first month in which you received student finance.
Earning an income
You can earn as much as you want without losing your right to student finance, for example with your job or your own business.
Statutory tuition fee
Tio is a private educational institution. The statutory tuition fee, therefore, does not apply.

- Payment obligation. Upon entering into the Study Agreement, the Student is obliged to pay the full Tuition Fees for all Study Years. This obligation is unconditional. The indebtedness of the Tuition Fees does not depend on the actual attendance of education, the passage of time or on any other condition whatsoever.
- Billing. Tio charges the Tuition Fees per Academic Year. She does this a few months before the start of the academic year. If Tio and the Student have agreed on payment in instalments, the Student will make the instalment payments at the latest on the agreed final payment dates. If no payment in instalments has been agreed, the amount owed must be paid in full within 14 days of the invoice date and no later than 10 working days before the start of the academic year.
- Payment term. The payment term for all other amounts is 14 days after the invoice date.
- Accrual payment. Every payment is attributed to the oldest outstanding invoice, regardless of any mention in the payment.
- Cost of study material. The price for the study material selected by Tio is included in the tuition fee. In some cases, this study material is digital. If a Student prefers to use a physical lesson book, the costs are for his own account. The following are not included in the tuition fee: costs involved in purchasing your own materials (laptop, clothing, pens, etc.), costs involved in internships, graduation project and travel costs. Also copying and printing costs are not included.
- Indexing Tuition fees. Tuition fees are determined annually. To prevent a Student from being confronted with price fluctuations during his/her Education, the starting point for each Student is the Tuition fee as laid down in the Study Agreement. This agreed amount is indexed annually with a maximum of 3%, further increases will not take place. Special arrangements apply for retaking an academic year and extended registrations, see Articles 5.7 and 5.8.
- Price extended registration. If the Student wishes to extend his registration for a Study Programme, the starting point is the price of the extended registration as it was during the first full-time registration for the Study Programme that the Student wishes to renew. That price is then indexed as described in Article 5, paragraph 6. This price guarantee applies for a maximum of two College years after the nominal study duration within Tio; thereafter the prices from the study guide that applies to the academic year in which the Student wishes to follow the education based on the extended registration applies.
- Price for retaking an academic year. The price for retaking an Academic Year for the second time is equal to 50% of the Tuition Fee that would be owed in accordance with paragraph 6 if the student had progressed to the next Academic Year.
- Price does not depend on attending education. Absence from classes (for example due to illness) cannot lead to a reduction in tuition fees or other fees.
Cancellation and (interim) termination of the agreement
Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that a student has to cancel his registration before his programme has started. That is why we give 14 days time of consideration in which you can cancel your registration free of charge until 1 July if you start in September. If you start in January, you can cancel free of charge until December 1. Have you already paid the tuition fees? Then you get that back.
After 1 July/1 December you can terminate the study agreement prematurely by formally canceling it (via tio.nl/en/cancellation). The law states that you have to pay a reasonable part of the tuition fees. How high that amount is, for example, depends on the education you have already attended.
You can also decide to stop the study programme at the end of the academic year. If you let us know before 1 July of the current academic year, you will not have to pay the tuition fees for the following year. If you cancel later, you will owe a reasonable part of the tuition fees for the next academic year.
The full terms and conditions and the cancellation form can be found in our general terms and conditions and are available at tio.nl/en/cancellation.
